I earn a living as a freelance video producer. Just a 4 or 5 years ago I could not have imagined doing this for a living, but the advent (and wide use) of Social Media in my area has made it possible. I have connected with and forged significant relationships with countless clients over twitter, facebook and blogging. On the other side of things, I’ve connected with a network of others that do what I do for advice, support and collaboration. So what is the single biggest benefit of using social media for me? It has enabled me to do what I love and earn a living at it!

Finding and joining those very important conversations that I would otherwise miss if not for this larger community. A connected way to share and debate ideas as well as test out new theories among peer groups (again, that I may not have otherwise been aware of), and finding new thoughts and ideas daily.

Social media has made me realize how often I have my own 2 cents to add. If I had a nickle for every 2 cents I have added to blogs, streams, and feeds…nickle mania!

Meeting people and sharing ideas all over the world

Social Media makes the world smaller, more accessable, global knowledge access and global sharing & linking.

Actually what has been very interesting for me is the fact that we all have something to say and contribute. Governments wish to control us and with social media we are actually able to express ourselves and have a voice. It means that people power is very much alive and kicking. We all have a voice and an opinion and we can make oursleves heard. The other benefit for me is to notice that there are so many like-minded people out there. It really does show that we are all the same. Lastly it shows that we all have a personality. Underneath the corporate mask there are real people and social media shows that very abundantly.
Great question and success!

Social media has helped me make intelligent just-in-time connections to conversations in my professional community. Its my source for being “in the know”.

As someone who has made a significant career change from academia to the healthcare/EMR training sector, I have benefited tremendously from using professional social media to connect with people in my new chosen field. I have been able to go to my very own “team of experts” to learn about best practices, new ideas and theories, and simply to gather data (informally) about how others have handled challenges related to e-Learning, especially as applied to healthcare. This benefit has enabled me to support my suggestions when presenting them to management(or to modify them based on new information). Finally, it’s just nice to “connect” with others who share my interests.
With regard to recreational or personal social media, I follow some very humorous people, and the laughs I get every day provide unmeasurable benefits to my health and well-being!
As others have said, great question!

For me social-networking helps to find new fashion. A way to advertise my projects. Also It’s very good thing keeping International contacts together. Stay in touch with them.
Sometimes is also fun to meet new people. I remember how hard was using IRC
